Dancing makes you feel better

Learning to dance is an effective way to banish the winter blues, with research indicating it can help more effectively than traditional forms of exercise like walking or yoga, and even some standard treatments. Dance combines physical activity, music, and social interaction, which together help combat the low mood, fatigue, and social withdrawal often associated with the winter blues.

More specifically dancing can help fight the winter blues by:

  • Boosting Mood Chemicals: Dancing triggers the release of endorphins (natural pain killers), dopamine (a pleasure chemical), and serotonin, which help stabilise mood and fight depression.
  • Reducing Stress: It lowers levels of cortisol, the “fight or flight” hormone that causes stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Encouraging Social Connection: Participating in a class helps break the isolation often felt during winter months, fostering a sense of community and support.
  • Providing Physical Activity: It offers a moderate-to-high intensity workout that gets the heart rate up, similar to a cardio workout.
